Set up Microsoft Defender properly

7 min read · Updated November 2026

Defender works out of the box, but a few switches are worth checking so you get its full strength.

Open Windows Security

Press the Start key, type Windows Security and open it. You will see a status for each protection area. Green ticks are good; any warning deserves a click.

Virus & threat protection

  1. Select Manage settings under Virus & threat protection settings.
  2. Turn on Real-time protection.
  3. Turn on Cloud-delivered protection and Automatic sample submission for faster detection of new threats.
  4. Turn on Tamper Protection so malware cannot quietly switch Defender off.

Ransomware protection

Open Ransomware protection and enable Controlled folder access. It blocks unknown programs from changing files in protected folders such as Documents and Pictures. If a trusted program is blocked, allow it under the same screen.

App & browser control

Open App & browser control and make sure Reputation-based protection and SmartScreen options are on. They warn you about risky downloads and sites.

Firewall

Under Firewall & network protection, confirm your active network profile shows the firewall as on.

Scans you should know

Keep it current

Open Settings, then Windows Update, and install updates. Defender receives its detection updates through Windows Update.

Tip: if Defender is greyed out, another security program may be managing protection. Check which one before changing anything.
