Download software without the junk
Most unwanted toolbars and adware arrive through the download itself. A few habits remove nearly all of that risk.
Choose the source carefully
- Use the Microsoft Store or the developer’s own website.
- Type the address yourself or use your bookmarks. Ads at the top of search results are sometimes fake download pages.
- Avoid “download manager” wrappers and sites that bundle many programs.
During installation
- Choose Custom or Advanced install when offered.
- Untick extra offers such as toolbars, search changes or trial software.
- Read what permissions the program asks for.
After installation
- Update apps regularly. In Windows Terminal,
winget upgradelists available updates. - Remove programs you no longer use in Settings, Apps, Installed apps.
- Check Startup apps so new programs do not slow the boot.
Red flag: a site asking you to turn off your antivirus before installing is almost always a trap.
